Electric-dryer guide

How much electricity does a clothes-dryer load cost?

For an electric dryer, multiply measured or label-derived kWh for one complete load by loads per week and 365 ÷ 7. Add connected standby separately.

Electricity-only scope: these scenarios apply to electric clothes dryers. Gas-dryer fuel costs are outside this calculator.

Three reproducible load scenarios

Three published electric clothes-dryer electricity-cost scenarios
Scenario Inputs Active per load Annual energy Annual cost
2.0 kWh for two loads per week 2.0 kWh/load; 2 loads/week; 0.5 W standby for 24 h/day; $0.18/kWh 2.000 kWh/use · $0.36/use 212.951 kWh $38.33
3.5 kWh for four loads per week 3.5 kWh/load; 4 loads/week; 0.5 W standby for 24 h/day; $0.18/kWh 3.500 kWh/use · $0.63/use 734.380 kWh $132.19
5.0 kWh for seven loads per week 5.0 kWh/load; 7 loads/week; 0.5 W standby for 24 h/day; $0.18/kWh 5.000 kWh/use · $0.90/use 1,829.380 kWh $329.29

$0.18/kWh is an illustrative comparison rate, not a national or current market price. Per-load cost is active electricity only.

Why complete-load kWh is preferred

Nameplate electrical power multiplied by the full cycle duration may misrepresent thermostat cycling, moisture sensing or heat-pump operation. Measure a complete representative load or use model-specific energy information.

Dryer type, load size, remaining moisture after washer spin, temperature, sensors and cycle duration all affect use. ENERGY STAR’s Combined Energy Factor accounts for operational and standby energy under a defined test, so it is not interchangeable with a home meter reading.

Safety boundary

Scheduled-disconnection and smart-plug economics are blocked. Do not use a household plug controller with high-current, 240-volt or hardwired dryer equipment. Editing standby watts cannot change this policy.
